The PC version has a lot of odd issues, and both the PC and Xbox version are missing a surprising number of effects present in the PS2 version.

Silent Hill 4 the PS2 version is the best by a mile. Then comes PS2 (which is very impressive for the hardware) and then Xbox.

The most notable areas with this is the Otherworld of the Hospital and Church, they upgraded a lot of the special effects from the PS2 version to be a lot more graphically impressive which also fit perfectly with the aesthetic of the game (which makes sense since the people who made the game were behind it). Has all the effects of the PS2 version, except where they step in and make actually better effects for specific scenes. This was the only PC port directly done by Team Silent, and it shows. Silent Hill 3 the best version is without a doubt the PC version. For PS2, look for the Greatest Hits version, which includes the additional scenario starring Maria. I would rank them PS2 (emulated if possible) > PC > Xbox. Some slight missing effects in the PC and Xbox version that are present in the PS2 version, but the PC version has a few quirks especially if you mod it some. The cinematics in the PS2 version are 60fps, while for PC they're 30fps for some reason (you can unlock game framerate through modding, but the pre-recorded cinematics stay 30fps). Silent Hill 2 the best version is probably the PS2 version. Having played every version of Silent Hill 2, 3, & 4:

Personally, I'd recommend the PlayStation 2 re-release, as the sound in SH is much more important than the visuals. It also kills every bit of atmosphere the game has (which is.not a benefit). The PC release has the benefit of no loading times and high-resolution support, as has been mentioned before. Since the PC version is a port of the Xbox release, I guess those changes were carried over, I don't know about the PS2 re-release, though, since I haven't seen a direct comparison yet. The Xbox release has some graphical improvements, such as higher resolution textures, slight anti-aliasing and "rounded" light from the torch (walls lighted with the torch were blocky in the original PS2 release), making it the best-looking. The playback is noticeably worse in the PC port, though.

The Xbox and PC releases use streamed ADX files that are recorded from the PS2 version, but the frequency is incredibly low in some of the files (22Khz), and the looping is very bad at times, resulting in clipping. Most of the music is sequenced there, as it was originally intended by Yamaoka. The PlayStation 2 re-release (Maria's bonus scenario Born from a Wish is only in "Saigo no Uta", "Greatest Hits" or "Director's Cut" depending on whether you're in Japan, North America or Europe) has the best sound.
